We have two annual campaigns that support military veterans. In the winter, our members donate personal items for men and women that are given to patients as they are discharged from the Jerry Pettis Memorial Hospital in Loma Linda.
In the spring we participate in Operation Baby Shower at the Juliet Center in Redlands. Members donate baby supplies, and the club purchases a few large items--high chairs, strollers, etc.. In all, the needs of approximately 250 veterans are served.
When illness or tragedy strikes a household, it affects everyone in the family. Our Advocates for Children's Chair coordinates with the local schools to pinpoint families in need. That may include groceries, school clothes, toys, or whatever special item that family needs.
For the past 30 years, on the first Sunday of December, Walnut Valley Women's Club has held a tree lighting ceremony at Walnut's Fire Station #61. We invite a community leader to light the large Christmas tree. Local children's choirs provide entertainment. A visit from Santa and his elf helper is the event highlight.
Victims of domestic violence often have to flee at a moment's notice with only the clothes on their backs. The WINGS program offers the abused partner and children a safe place to stay, and offers free counselling. The WINGS (YWCA) shelter is always in need of clothing (especially pajamas), pillows, and personal items. We have adopted this as an ongoing year round project.
Future scientists and engineers are participating in one of Suzanne's Middle School's Robotics Clubs. The expensive robots these teens build give them valuable hands-on experience.
The Walnut Teen Center provides a safe environment for teens to socialize. It also provides tutoring.
Walnut Valley Women's Club gives assistance to both of these valuable educational resources.
